Finding the right place to take your photos can take a bit of research. Timing is also very important as a sunrise or sunset can have a dramatic effect on the composition. So, here are a few locations that I've found offer great views of New York, London, Hong Kong and Florence.

Rome is a city full of history and historical monuments, most of them easily accessible and in the open air, plenty of opportunities to take breathtaking photos. Being originally built over 7 hills, it's also not difficult to find places where it's possible to observe a beautiful panorama looking at the skyline of the city. The charme of Rome is increased at night, when traffic slows down and there is a more relaxed atmosphere. Below is a selection of 10 locations where to take interesting pictures, with samples of my photos and contributions from other authors.

London has many great locations to take a decent photograph. After a day of exploring London I've put together a collection of some of the best places and example photos taken at each location. I used a Canon 1DS Mark 1 digital SLR, with a Canon 17-40mm L lens for the majority of photos, I also used a tripod which was very handy once it started getting dark. It's possible to balance a camera on flat surfaces a lot of the time, however this isn't always the case.

Sony has recently announced a new camera to their family of SLRs, namely the SLT A58. This one is meant to replace the previous Sony A37 and Sony A57 models. It's got a respectable 20MP sensor and can shoot in continuous shooting mode at an impressive 8 frames a second.

The City of Levallois in France runs an annual photography competition for people aged 35 and under. The top prize for winning is a staggering 10,000 euros and the deadline for entries is 20th May 2013. Get submitting!

Forrest Tanaka has produced an excellent video about astrophotography. So if this is an area of photography you'd like to learn more about, it's a great idea to go through his videos first.

This is the first video in a series which covers telescopes particularly suitable ones to go for. so I'm guessing Forrest will be adding a number of further videos which cover the other aspects of astrophotography.

Below is October's cool pics of the day. An eclectic mix ranging from outer space to under the ocean. I hope you enjoy them, don't forget to check out the author's websites for more great photos!
