A trip to Paris with a Canon EOS 5D, in HDR

WIth an opportunity to visit the beautiful City of Paris, I thought I’d take the chance to try out the Canon EOS 5D, along with my trusty Canon 17-40mm and 15mm fisheye. The Canon 5D is an older camera, launched in 2005, and it’s price has been dropping steadily thanks to the introduction of more recent full frames such as the Canon 5D Mark 3, the Canon 6D and Nikon D600. So, if you’re looking for a cheap full frame digital slr, then the Canon 5D could be a decent option.

There are many wondrous cities in the world, and in Europe alone, one can argue the compared merits of, say, Rome, Athens, Paris, Madrid or quite a few others. Venice, however, is in a different league from all those prestigious competitors, not only because of its sheer concentration of art in every form and shape, but also because of its unique situation : it is a city built on water, a city literally resting on millions of stilts, where water is everywhere and cars nowhere to be seen – except for the ugly appendage of Piazzale Roma, which all visitors leave behind as soon as they can upon their arrival.

At the London 2012 Olympics with a Canon 50D

I was fortunate enough to visit the London 2012 Olympics during the athletics, so thought it would be an ideal opportunity to try out the Canon 50D (thanks James). I’ve previously tested out both the Canon 40D, and Canon 60D, so putting the 50D through its paces seemed like a good idea!

I took with me my trusty Sigma 70-300mm telephoto lens, as well as the Canon 17-40mm F4L for any wide-angle shots.

Hunting and photographing the Northern Lights

To be able to photograph the Northern Lights, a bit of planning is required. In fact, the Northern Lights are only visible in the “Auroral Oval” at high latitudes around the Polar Circles, and where there is no light pollution, far from the big cities. Some well known areas for photographing the Northern Lights include Lapland and the north of Scandinavia, Alaska and Iceland. It’s more difficult to find a good spot in the Southern hemisphere around the Antarctic Circle. In the Southern hemisphere the Southern Lights are called the Aurora Australis.

Rome is a city full of history and historical monuments, most of them easily accessible and in the open air, plenty of opportunities to take breathtaking photos. Being originally built over 7 hills, it’s also not difficult to find places where it’s possible to observe a beautiful panorama looking at the skyline of the city. The charme of Rome is increased at night, when traffic slows down and there is a more relaxed atmosphere. Plan on traveling and visiting the Windy City soon? Chicago, like many big cities, is full of vibrant life and ongoing activities. Whether it’s day or night, overcast or sunny, one can always obtain wonderful photography from the normal tourist areas or in Chicago’s secrets nooks and crannies. Here is a miniscule look from the thousands of locations that are great spots to get fantastic photography. Here is a list of specific places that are mention in this blog. They are all in the area most commonly referred to as The Loop: Millenium Park, Wrigley Building, Tribune Building, Water Tower Plaza, Chicago River. And Michigan Lake’s water front. Most of them are within three miles of the heart of the city. Just remember to open your eyes and always look for color to get the best shots…

Stunning Photos Taken With A Neutral Density Filter

If you’ve ever seen those waterfall photographs where it’s bright daylight but the water appears to be flowing smoothly as if the shutter speed is very slow, you’re probably looking at a photo taken with a neutral density filter over the lens. They basically darken the scene allowing for a longer shutter speed to be used when there is still bright sunlight. Graduated neutral density filters are also popular. GND filters darken part of a scene, e.g. a bright sky, allowing a more even illumination throughout the picture. Good Photo Locations Around London

London has many great locations to take a decent photograph. After a day of exploring London I’ve put together a collection of some of the best places and example photos taken at each location.

I used a Canon 1DS Mark 1 digital SLR, with a Canon 17-40mm L lens for the majority of photos, I also used a tripod which was very handy once it started getting dark. It’s possible to balance a camera on flat surfaces a lot of the time, however this isn’t always the case.
